BLOGGER.COM PROBLEMS is seriously wonky at the moment so let me put at the head of this page my usual advice:

If there are no recent posts here blame and visit my "First Draft" site instead or check my HomePage for a new blog address.

Writing in the WSJ, Susan Lee makes out there is more of a conflict between conservatism and libertarianism than there really is. As I have pointed out at some length elsewhere, concern for individual liberty and a distrust of big government is historically basic to conservatism. Where libertarians and conservatives differ is that conservatives add on a few extra bits and pieces (such as Sunday observance and sexual restrictiveness) that libertarians do not -- that is all. And the add-ons vary from one conservative to another. And most of the add-ons seem to be fading away rapidly everywhere except among the religious Right.
